Wednesday is the week's hinge, and it arrives at 8:30am ET. September CPI is expected to show headline inflation accelerating to 3.6% year-over-year from 3.4% in August on a 0.6% monthly rise — almost entirely an energy story — while core is expected to cool to 0.2% month-over-month and 2.5% year-over-year from 2.4%. The market walks in flat-footed: the S&P 500 closed Tuesday at 7,805.45 (−0.01%), the Dow at 51,670.10 (−0.33%), and the Nasdaq Composite at 27,204.38 (−0.16%), with the VIX at 15.21 and the 10-year at 5.216%. Futures at 5:41am ET show the same split personality as Tuesday — Dow E-minis up 234 points (+0.45%), S&P 500 E-minis up 16.25 points (+0.21%), Nasdaq 100 E-minis down 9 points (−0.03%), Russell 2000 futures up about 0.3%. The framework's read: the headline number is already priced as hot — the trade is core. A 0.2% core print keeps the December-hike base case intact and lets the record bid breathe; a 0.3% core print pulls the October hike back onto the table, with futures pricing roughly a 22% chance of an October move going in.
8:30 AM Update — September CPI
Added 8:41am ET. Headline CPI rose 0.6% month-over-month (in line) and 3.7% year-over-year (vs 3.6% expected, up from 3.4% in August); core CPI rose 0.3% month-over-month (vs 0.2% expected, matching August's 0.3%) and 2.6% year-over-year (vs 2.5% expected, up from 2.4%). The hot-core branch of the reaction function played out: futures turned lower after the print — at 8:33am ET, Dow E-minis were down 0.16%, S&P 500 E-minis down 0.24%, and Nasdaq 100 E-minis down 0.49% — while the 10-year yield jumped to 5.26% from 5.19% before the release, and CME FedWatch October hike odds rose to 39% from 22%. Thursday's PPI and retail sales now carry more weight: firm data there would put the December-only path in doubt.

The CPI Reaction Function
The framework reads today's print along three branches, and the tell is core month-over-month, not the headline.
- In-line core (+0.2% m/m, 2.5% y/y): The energy story holds — headline hot, underlying cool. Yields ease, the dollar softens, and the S&P 500 gets its look at the record 7,811.54 mark with the December-hike base case intact. The framework's read: this is the base-case branch — the patient bid is rewarded, and Thursday's PPI/retail sales become the confirmation rather than the verdict.
- Soft core (+0.1% m/m or below): A genuine downside surprise. Rate-hike pricing for October collapses, the 10-year tests below 5.15%, and growth and small-caps lead as the market prices a Fed that can wait well past December. The framework's read: the risk is a relief rally that runs too far too fast into Thursday's data — the desk watches whether the move holds past the cash open.
- Hot core (+0.3% m/m or above): The one that moves the date. October hike odds jump from roughly one-in-five toward a coin flip, yields retest last week's 5.37% extreme, and the tape rotates hard into energy and defensives while the Nasdaq gives back the futures bid. The framework's read: a hot core print also reframes Thursday — retail sales would need to be soft to keep the December-only path alive.
Overnight Headlines
- Asia fades an early tech bounce — The Nikkei edged 0.05% lower and South Korea's KOSPI ended down 0.4% after gaining earlier in the session, as the chip rebound ran out of steam; MSCI's Asia-Pacific index outside Japan had been up 0.5% intraday. Samsung and SK Hynix rose more than 2% intraday before fading, and the session leaves the CXMT story unresolved rather than reversed.
- China's data split: hot factory gates, cool consumers — September CPI printed 0.9% year-over-year (below the 1.0% expected) while PPI accelerated to 5.0% (above the 4.5% expected), the fastest factory-gate pace since June 2022. Exports surged 36.3% year-over-year (vs 25.5% expected) and imports rose 31% (vs 24.5% expected). Singapore's central bank held policy steady, surprising all 10 analysts polled who expected tightening.
- Europe firms into the print — The Stoxx 600 rose about 0.6%, with Germany's DAX and France's CAC 40 both up around 0.5% and the FTSE 100 up about 0.3% near 10,685. ASML raised its full-year sales outlook for the third time on demand outrunning capacity through 2028, lifting European AI-linked names — though the U.S.-listed shares turned lower before the open after Q3 sales missed expectations.
- Oil holds the high ground — WTI near $95 and Brent near $106.60 after Houthi attacks on a Saudi Aramco administrative building in Dhahran and continued Hormuz tanker incidents; the IEA warned diesel shortages could run well into 2027. One prominent investor told CNBC oil could rally another $20–25 a barrel — a single investor's view, but a sign of how crowded the long-oil positioning has become.
What to Watch at the Open
- The core CPI print at 8:30am ET — headline 3.6% is the consensus and the market's expectation; the trade is the 0.2% core month-over-month. Watch the first 15 minutes: an in-line print that fades is a positioning tell, not a data tell.
- Bank of America's miss — Earnings of $0.91 per share vs about $1.10 expected, including a $1.21 billion Treasury penalty that knocked roughly 17 cents off the quarter; revenue of about $30.0 billion vs $30.69 billion expected. Shares fell about 3.5% premarket. Morgan Stanley reports shortly (about $2.91 EPS on about $19.95 billion revenue expected) — a beat there would stop the bank-trade bleeding after JPMorgan's miss and Citi's 5.5% drop.
- Chips on day three of the rout — Intel −1.1% and Micron −1.3% in premarket, Nvidia +0.2%. ASML's guidance lift failing to hold the U.S. listing is the tell: if the complex can't bounce on a CPI-in-line day, this is becoming a demand story, not a headline story.
- The 10-year's reaction — easing toward 5.20% into the print after touching its lowest in nearly two weeks. A hot core print that pushes yields back toward 5.37% is the fastest path to a red day; a soft print that holds yields below 5.20% is the green light for the record bid.
The Structural Read
The desk's standing targets are HELD: 1-month 7,850, 3-month 8,000, year-end 8,150 — the record zone stays within reach while the tape rotates rather than retreats. Desk judgment: Tuesday was the market holding the line through a bad bank tape and a second day of chip selling; today is the market deciding whether that patience was wisdom or complacency. The New York Fed's Williams said Tuesday that one more hike this year is appropriate but none in 2027 — the market's base case in one sentence — and today's core print either ratifies it or reopens the October question. The one thing that would change the read is a hot core print paired with firm Thursday retail sales: that combination would put the year-end 8,150 anchor on notice. CPI remains the week's main event, and this morning's print sets the October FOMC's rate odds.
Bottom line: The market walks into its biggest data point of the week with the record still within reach, a split futures board, and a bank trade that has stopped working. CPI decides the week; core decides CPI. Watch the 10-year and the bank tape after 8:30 — those two tell you which scenario is playing out by 10am.
